History of the NEKC

The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont possesses innumerable assets: engaged citizens, dynamic entrepreneurs, exceptional educational and healthcare institutions, natural and cultural treasures, and a vibrant nonprofit sector.

Despite these resources, the region continues to face persistent economic and social challenges. These challenges are exacerbated by a lack of coordination, disconnection of services, limited funding, and the need for strong leadership to implement existing community and economic development strategies.

The NEK Collaborative, through its convening authority, possesses a unique ability to foster conversation and engender strategic partnerships.

The Northeast Kingdom Collaborative was formed in 1996 to find ways to collaborate on economic development and community development issues in the Northeast Kingdom.

Since 2000, the NEKC has worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Rural Economic Advancement Program (REAP) to direct federal funds to economic priorities in the region. In 2017, the organization launched a new strategy involving a reformatted governing board, a new paid director, closer ties with private funders and the task force process.

Using this approach, the NEKC has set a new path forward to strengthen its reach and impact. The breadth of representation on its governing board gives it the ability to facilitate communication and cooperation across sectors. The flexibility of its approach makes it a useful leader and facilitator of project start-ups.
