The NEK: Totally Unique

The Northeast Kingdom (NEK) is the region at the northeast corner of Vermont, comprising Essex, Orleans and Caledonia.

With only 64,108 residents within its 2,027 square miles, it is the least populous and least densely-settled part of Vermont.

It’s unmatched natural beauty and killer local food scene make it one of the top vacation destinations in New England.

You know, this is such beautiful country up here. It ought to be called the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.
— George Aiken, Former Senator

Don’t be fooled—it’s not Utopia.

Though the quality of life in the NEK is enviable, the region faces persistent economic challenges that make living and working in the region a struggle for many. Basic needs like broadband internet and emergency services are lacking, making it difficult to keep and attract residents.
